Overview

About bedroom false ceiling

Bedroom ceilings get designed for the photograph — every light on, every cove glowing. The room is then used in the opposite condition for eight hours a night.

What matters in practice is a layer of light you can use at low level, a lighting circuit you can reach from the bed, and no downlight positioned directly over a pillow. Those three decisions cost nothing extra at the design stage and are expensive to retrofit.

Answers

Bedroom False Ceiling — questions

Will a false ceiling make my bedroom feel small?

It can, in a flat with 9 ft 6 in slab height, which most 1990s Mumbai construction has. A peripheral cove drops only the edges and leaves the centre at full height, which reads as taller rather than shorter. A full-area drop in that height is something we usually advise against.

Where should downlights go in a bedroom?

Not over the bed. The common mistake is a symmetrical grid that puts a light directly above where you lie, which is unusable at night and glaring when you sit up. We mark positions against the actual bed location, not the room centre.

Can the AC be integrated into the ceiling?

Yes, and it should be planned before framing. The drain line needs a fall, the return needs clear area, and there must be an access panel at the drain. Retrofitting any of that means cutting a finished ceiling.
