Overview

About hall pop ceiling

Hall ceilings are where decorative POP work earns its place. A running cornice, a radiused corner, a moulded band around a chandelier point — these are shapes gypsum board genuinely cannot produce.

The method that works is a gypsum board field carrying the structure, with POP applied for the profile. The method still commonly quoted, POP over chicken mesh across the entire hall, has nothing holding it dimensionally stable and cracks along predictable lines within two to three years.

Answers

Hall POP Ceiling — questions

Can you do a full POP ceiling in the hall?

We can, but we will tell you it is the wrong specification. POP over chicken mesh across a full hall has no dimensional stability and cracks along predictable lines. The honest version is a gypsum field with POP cornice work — you get the same visual result with a ceiling that holds.

What does a POP cornice add to the cost?

It is priced per running foot and depends on the profile depth and whether it is run in situ or cast. A simple two-step cornice is modest; a deep moulded profile with corner mitres costs considerably more because of the labour. We price it as a separate line so you can see it.

How long before I can paint POP?

Three to five days of curing, then a sealer coat before the finish. POP is absorbent and painting it too early traps moisture, which shows as flaking within months. This is a common corner to cut when a contractor is working to a compressed schedule.
